| Notes for Dr. Artemas Bullard |
Was the only one of his father's children who received a professional education. About the time he became of age he commenced the study of medicine with Dr. John B. Kettredge of Framingham and afterwards spent about two years in the office of Daniel Fiske of Oxford. On the 28th of Aug 1794, with a small stock of medicines costing twelve pounds, and under a debt of like amount, he commenced the practice of his profession in Northbridge.1
In 1805, moved with 2nd wife Lucy from Northbridge to Sutton, where he bought the large beautiful farm of Ebenezer Waters, former father-in-law in West Sutton.
Was appointed by Governor Strong, surgeon of the local infantry regiment. In 1814 he was elected a fellow of the council of the Massachusetts Medical Society.
"He possessed ardent fellings and a great energy of character, united with a sound judgment. His integrity was proverbial, always doing exact justice to others, and expecting the same from them."1
Died following "a fall from a scaffold in his barn" (Sutton, Mass vital records P 219 and p 403)
